Backlash Against Avantika for Rumored Rapunzel Role Sparks Controversy

Avantika Vandanapu, known for her role in “Mean Girls,” faced racist comments online after rumors spread that she might play Rapunzel in a live-action version of Disney’s “Tangled.”

Although Disney hasn’t confirmed a live-action Rapunzel movie, some fan accounts on social media claimed Avantika, an Indian American actress, was auditioning for the role. Many fans of “Tangled” took these rumors seriously, with some supporting the idea of casting her.

However, others responded with racist remarks on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, arguing that an Indian woman with long black hair isn’t suitable for the role. Some comments insisted that Rapunzel should be portrayed by a blonde white girl because the character is from a German folk story.

Avantika’s Instagram was flooded with hateful comments, with some calling her names and expressing concerns about her potentially ruining the movie.

Similar backlash occurred when actresses of color were cast in other Disney remakes, such as Halle Bailey as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan expressing interest in the role of Rapunzel.

Despite the negativity, South Asian fans defended Avantika, emphasizing that the live-action “Tangled” movie hasn’t been confirmed and expressing support for her potential casting. They highlighted her suitability for the role and criticized the racist comments circulating online.
