Tricky Scam Uses Deepfake to Fool Finance Worker into Paying $25 Million

Here’s how it happened: The worker had a video call that he thought was with his colleagues. But actually, the people on the call were fake. They looked and sounded just like real people, thanks to deepfake technology.

At first, the worker got a strange email from the company’s chief financial officer in the UK. It talked about a secret transaction. The worker thought it might be a trick, but he ignored his doubts when he saw what he thought were his real colleagues on the video call.

Thinking everything was normal, the worker agreed to send $25 million. But it was all a scam.

This isn’t the only time scammers have used deepfake technology. Hong Kong police have caught several people using it to cheat others. In one case, they found out that scammers used stolen ID cards to apply for loans and open bank accounts.

The fake CFO scam was only uncovered when the worker checked with the company’s main office. It’s a reminder to always be careful, especially when dealing with money and important information.
